Karen and Laura are saddened to share the loss of a beloved husband and best dad in the world. Darren passed away at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on Friday, February 10, 2023. Heaven has a new angel. A respectful angel equipped with a tool belt and the patience to fix anything. An uncommonly decent angel who loves to lend a helping hand, and if it involves driving, even better. A very gentle angel who only knows how to give. Darren struggled mightily without complaint with numerous health issues over the past few years. These challenges did not keep him from thoroughly enjoying his cottage on the eastern shore on Conrad’s Lake, nor regular trips to Orange Lake, Florida. His slow easy golf swing, his skating cross cuts, the way he held his baby Laura, the constant effort to keep his shed organized -- he excelled at what he loved. His family was his everything. To his Mom, Sylvia, and sisters Cris, Kathy, and Marcie -- he was the son and the brother and he tried hard to be both. His Dad, Ken, now has both of his boys, Jamie and Darren, by his side. Karen and Darren have been together since age 17 and 19 and he is pretty much a brother and son in the Pat and Barb Oldfield family as well. Barb’s Sunday tea biscuits with butter and jam were a cottage highlight, not to be missed. And there are no words to properly describe Darren and Pops’ trials and tribulations and laughs as they constantly fixed this and that at the Lake. Darren loved his daughter Laura more than life itself. He was so proud of her for her big heart and capacity for love. And very excited for September to formally welcome Laura’s fiancé, Matt Keefe into the family. Supporting and encouraging Karen, being the one person who was always by her side through thick and thin, guarantees Darren a special place in heaven. He said, “I told you I loved you on the day I married you. If anything changes, I’ll let you know.” Nothing more was ever said. The flowers, the roses, and fixing everything, spoke louder than any words could ever do. Laura and Karen say thank you to all the many friends and family who have helped over the years. Don’t worry about us, Dad. Have fun, you can see again. You can drive again, you can watch Montreal try to win again, you can play Augusta National or any course you want. And you can pick Mom up in the TR6 someday and go wherever you want. We love you to the moon and back. Special thank you to the kidney dialysis nurses and staff on 6th Floor Dickson.
