Douglas Earl Tanner

TANNER, Douglas Earl, age 90 of Halifax, passed away peacefully at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building on July 18, 2024. Born in Halifax on April 20, 1934, he was a son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth (Vaters) Tanner. Dad joined the RCAF in 1952 and had postings in Claresholm, AB, North Bay, Ont., Greenwood, N.S. and Comox, B.C. He retired from the RCAF in 1972 as an Aircraft Engine Technician and our family moved to River Bourgeois, Cape Breton for several years. Upon returning to Halifax, he was employed as a Safety and Accommodations Officer in Greenwood, Nova Scotia for several years and as a Commissionaire with the National Research Council for 20 years before retiring full-time. During his childhood, Dad loved spending summers in River Bourgeois with his Great-Aunt Suzanne, Great-Uncle Vital and Great-Aunt Charlotte. Dad and Mom spent many summer months camping at Sherwood Forest in Coldbrook. He loved to play golf, bingo, horseshoes, watch his favourite Toronto Maple Leafs, and enjoyed a good game of poker with family members. He also enjoyed going to hockey games with his best buddy, Wayne Moulton. He was predeceased by Mom (Sweets) Shirley (nee Burke). He is survived by his daughter, Valerie (Bruce) Millington, Bedford, sons, William (Janetta), Tantallon and Douglas Jr. (Isabelle), Halifax; grandchildren, Bruce Jr. (Brittany), Kimberley (Ian), Alicia (Jason), MacDonald, Jeremy (Jennifer), Peter (Kelly), great-grandchildren, Gracie, Chloe, Bella, Kelton, Ryder, Blake, Katie, Luke and Jace; brothers, Gerald (Sheena), Halifax, Bernard (Bernice), Wilmot; sisters, Betty Rice, Weymouth, Helen (David) Udle, Margaree, Susan (Wayne) Leslie, Halifax, Linda Pottie, St. Peter’s, Marilyn MacEachern, Sydney and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Ernest Jr. and William (Bill), sister, Patricia Fougere. Thank you to the nurses and staff at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building where Dad spent his last years. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or memorial service.
