Elizabeth Lorraine Rogers

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Elizabeth ‘Lorraine’ Rogers (nee Ryall) on July 14th at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, NS. Born in St. John's NL, Lorraine was the firstborn of 18 children to James Francis and Gladys Elizabeth Ryall (nee Dinn). As the oldest child of a large family, Lorraine was both sister and matriarch. She was playmate, provider, and caregiver to a beautiful and growing family. Her siblings ranged from toddlers to young adults and she was the perfect big sister to them all. She worked to hone her skills as a housekeeper in preparation for her eventual marriage to the man of her dreams, Paul McCartney. He never called, but she married Robert ‘Bob’ Rogers. Together, they had one child, Jim Rogers . Lorraine and Bob gave Jim nothing but love and support, raising him together for 21 years before they parted amicably. Her work life brought her to Canada Post, where she was a Human Resource Officer. It was there that she eventually met Laurie Stewart. They married in 2004. From this union, Lorraine inherited 5 wonderful daughters and their families. Lorraine developed a special bond with Laurie's daughter Kendra, whom she called frequently so they could stay up to date on each other’s lives, discuss the problems of the day, and share a few laughs. Lorraine and Laurie built a happy life with a shared love of music, animals, travel, and just being together. They also had a mutual understanding that you don't pester her when Coronation Street is on. In Laurie's world, it was whatever Lorraine wanted. He loved her and doted on her and provided her with whatever her heart desired. She wanted to swim with dolphins, so he took her to Florida to swim with dolphins. Numerous times. She truly wanted for nothing, and she knew how lucky she was. They both loved doting on Aidan, Lorraine's grandson, and Lorraine loved the close relationship that Laurie and Aidan share. One of Lorraine’s greatest pleasures was Aidan’s many unexpected visits when he would drop by on his way home from school or work. Lorraine loved her relationship with her step-granddaughter, Renee Bourget. She was always so excited to put together a bag of gifts for her, and brought her on trips to the valley with Aidan. From Christmases to birthdays to graduations, Lorraine celebrated every special occasion with Aidan and Renee. Lorraine had a creative side to her. She was an accomplished seamstress, and was responsible for the creation of and/or alterations to many, many outfits, dresses, wedding dresses, even HalCon costumes, for members of her family. She was also amazing at knitting, and was instrumental in keeping her sister Jackie from losing it and giving up on knitting projects. She took up crafting and was really talented at any project she took on. Their home is filled with her beautiful creations, especially during the holidays. Lorraine loved to share her time with family and friends, and you were likely to be invited over to play a board game, enjoy a charcuterie board, or indulge in her baked goods. Jim and Shelley will miss her cherry cake at Christmas. As creative as Lorraine was, she had a sharp mind and enjoyed reading, debating, and writing more than a few letters to local politicians. She was analytical and strong-minded, often discussing world politics with Aidan and Jim. Lorraine was generous and happy to share, even sharing her birthday with her daughter-in-law Shelley. Every birthday was twice as special for them and they had an amazing bond. Throughout life though Lorraine’s center was always her family. When they gathered, whether it be at “202”, “The Freedom Farm”, “Mary and Karl’s”, or “Debbie and Foster’s” she was always there. She would never miss a moment with her siblings at a garden party, Canada Day celebration, Hockey Day in Canada or Christmas gathering. She loved them all. Lorraine was quietly strong. She fought every obstacle life could present and won. She left this world on her own terms and when she was ready. Lorraine is predeceased by her parents, brother Nick, sister Valerie, brothers-in-law Foster, Bob and Scott. Lorraine is survived by her loving husband Laurie Stewart; son Jim Rogers (Shelley), Grandson Aidan, as well as siblings Gail, Frank, Debbie, Noel (Joan), Lori, Mary (Karl), Mercedes, Sam (Jocelyn), Michele (Pat), Jackie (Rod), Leo (Cherie), David, Doug (Cathy), Sean (Danielle), and Tracey (Darren); and sister-in-law Susan, and many nieces and nephews. Lorraine's wishes were to be cremated, and for no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, or to the charity of your choice.
