Hazel Elizabeth McCormack

McCormack (Baxter), Hazel Elizabeth - 83 of Upper Sackville, passed away July 19,2026 in the Victoria General Hospital QEII Health Sciences Centre. Hazel was born in Canning on August 29,1942 and had worked at Foulis Engineering for 9 years as a secretary, stayed home for 16 years to raise her son Michael and worked at Sears Outlet Store as a store clerk for 18 years until her retirement in 2002. She enjoyed, shopping, camping, then moteling in the later years, an avid reader of Danielle Steele books, word find puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy nightly, day tripping around the province, going on picnics, going to the beach and travelling around the Maritimes especially PEI which she thought of her as a second home and Nova Scotia. She also loved celebrating all Holidays especially at Christmas time where the house was decorated to the point where it would rival a department store display and there wasn’t a gift shop she didn’t stop at even to look but always came home with a bag in her hand. She was a collector of many items and loved to display every one of them in every room in and outside of the house. She loved her dishes, teapots, dolls, foxes, bears, Nova Scotia tartan collections and stuffed animals the most. She was there for her family through the good and bad times, especially at Christmas when she made sure everyone received a present or a Christmas card in the later years. If asked what would be her greatest accomplishment it would have to be her son Michael, for whom she lived for. She was their for her son Michael for anything and everything. She was the best Mom in the world and will be missed beyond words. The only good thing to come out of this is that she will have no more pain and discomfort which she was experiencing daily at the end of life, she is at peace with her husband Gerald and son Jeffrey. Hazel was married to her husband and travelling companion Gerald McCormack for 44 years (1965-2009) living in Fairview, Lower Sackville then Upper Sackville. Hazel is survived by her son Michael McCormack of Upper Sackville; many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family; Her world was family especially nieces and nephews of her sister Rosina who always said she thought as her own children Susan, Terry, Barry, Cathy, Tim and Krista as well as all of their children and their children who called her “Aunt Hazy”. She was predeceased by son Jeffery in infancy in 1973; Her husband Gerald in 2009; Her sister Rosina Comeau in 2025; Her parents Barry and Constance Baxter in 1963 and 1967. Hazel is also survived by her best friend of the last 80 years Carol Weare and friends who are family John, Sharon and Joseph Kinsmen who was “Grammy Hazy” to her. Cremation has taken place. Internment of her ashes will be determined at a future date for friends and family at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A reception will follow at her son Michael’s house. Family flowers only. Her son Michael would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the VG 9B and 7B for their compassionate care of Hazel, they made her as comfortable as possible during her stay.
