CSATARI, John Andrew July 5, 1949- March 16, 2026 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and brother John Csatari on March 16 at QEII Hospital in Halifax. Born in Hamilton, ON, John grew up in the Hungarian community in the city’s East End, where he was well-known for his brilliance in both academics and mischief. Raised by his mother and grandparents following the untimely death of his father, John treasured his extended family in both Hamilton and New Jersey – relationships that he maintained over the course of his life. John married his true love and best friend, Susan, in 1975, and adored and drove her crazy for the next 50 years. John and Susan settled in Mississauga, ON, where they raised their children, Stephen and Andrea, both of whom John adored, doted on, and trained in his signature arts of wit and mayhem. John delighted in watching his children grow and was well-known to all of their friends, for whom John and Susan’s basement family room was a second home. John built a very successful career in Toronto, beginning in accounting and expanding to the tech sector, earning a reputation for integrity and loyalty, and bringing his signature sense of humour into long term relationships with clients. John and Susan lost their son, Stephen, suddenly in 2002 to an inherited cardiac condition. The loss utterly broke John’s heart and was a weight he carried for the rest of his life. The births of his three grandchildren were a tremendous gift to him and their antics never ceased to delight him and make him laugh. John enjoyed a good quality of life – and a good deal of seafood and Celtic music – after retiring to PEI to be near precious family, in spite of the limitations from the same inherited heart condition that robbed him of his son. His death was due to an unexpected complication and has left us devastated and missing him terribly. Throughout his successes and sorrows, John was generous and indescribable, somehow always managing to maintain the signature twinkle in his eye. John left the world – as he lived – to the sounds of the Hungarian Csárdás and Celtic pipes, having managed (characteristically and to Susan’s great consternation) to raid the hospital supply cupboard, and leaving us all richer for having known him. He leaves behind his wife Susan, daughter Andrea and son-in-law Simon Wilmot, his beloved grandchildren Levi, Finn, and Evie, and his sister Irene Csatari Lueckenhoff. He is pre-deceased by his son Stephen, his parents John and Anne Csatari, and his brothers-in-law Art Lueckenhoff and Michael Temperley. He will be fondly remembered by his brother-in-law David and the Temperley family. He is loved and will be greatly missed by his cousin Nick Horansky, and his Csatari/Balogh cousins and their families in the U.S.; trips to visit and LBI vacations with them were the highlight of John’s and our family’s lives and are treasured memories. John treasured his life long friendships through his early years in Hamilton and Mississauga, and his long career in Toronto; thank you to all those dear friends who have sent loving messages. Close friends of our children - Avery Guthrie and family, Rachel A’Howatt, and Shawna (Lampshade) Phillips - have been like family to him, and have helped us greatly over the years in dealing with the pain of losing Stephen. Since moving to PEI, he greatly enjoyed his friendship with Bob Thistle and Kevin Lee of Charlottetown, as well as with the members of the Board of our Condo Corporation, of which he served as President, and our neighbours on Autumn Lane in Stratford PE Cremation has already taken place. A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
