Roderick Joseph Surette

Roderick Joseph Surette, lovingly known as “Pops,” born August 6, 1951 passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at the age of 74 surrounded by family. Though affectionately called “Grumpy” by his great-grandson, Pops was anything but—his warmth, humor, and kindness shone whenever family and friends were near. Born to and predeceased by his parents, Benjamin Surette and Evelyn Barrett, and his grandfather, Henry Elois, with whom he spent much of his childhood. He was also predeceased by his brothers Jimmy Norris and Richard Surette. Roderick is survived by his siblings Donna (Lee), Larry, Tracy (Tom), and Miles (Colleen); his children Cynthia (Shawn), Stephen, and Jodie (Ali); his beloved grandchildren Melissa (Jeffrey), Catherine (Jeremy), Kyle (Ashley), and Jessie; and his great-grandchildren Braylon, Wesley, and Lincoln, who were his pride and joy. He shared his life with his lifelong love, Dorothy Conrad, and his faithful companion, his beloved pup Barkley, who rarely left his side. A proud fisherman in his younger years, Roderick spent many seasons hauling traps back home in Pubnico before working for many years with Leo J. Beazley’s, where he could often be found perched on his famous stool in the garage—good-naturedly bossing everyone around. He loved nothing more than sharing countless cups of tea with close friends Joe and Jonas, and spending cherished time with his “Princess,” Melissa. Spending time at his camper in Clyde River with his sister and brother He found peace in simple pleasures—especially strolling the Eastern Passage boardwalk and enjoying good conversations and laughter with friends Luke, Lisa, Diane, Donnie, and Stephen and visiting his queenie. Roderick’s life was rich with friendship, family, and love. He will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and the joy he brought to all who knew him. Special thanks to Tiffany, Cassy, Melissa and Ramara for their compassionate care and support during his final days, and to the dedicated staff of 4E, 5W, and the Palliative Care team at Dartmouth General Hospital. A celebration of life will take place Friday, October 24th, 2025 at 4 Government Wharf Rd, Eastern Passage from 6-8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation in Roderick’s memory.
