Tanya Winnifred Starratt

Tanya Starratt, born on April 10, 1951, passed away peacefully at the age of 73, surrounded by her loving family. Tanya was a strong, empathetic, and organized individual who lived a life of integrity. Tanya was an accomplished athlete with a passion for tennis that she passed on to her children. She was also a graceful dancer, a skilled sewist, and a talented painter. Her creativity and disciplined nature shone through in all her pursuits. As a devoted mother to her two children, Cameron and Neila, Tanya's love and dedication were boundless. She tirelessly supported and encouraged them to reach their full potential, be it in the field of athletics or academics, instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance that she exemplified throughout her life. Professionally, Tanya began her career as a Phys Ed teacher. Later, she dedicated many years to special education teaching, where her kindness, commitment, and empathetic nature profoundly impacted the lives of her students. Even after a work-related accident, resulting in a head injury, forced her to retire prematurely, she continued to check in on many of her students and be an important presence in their lives. Her spirit of generosity extended beyond her immediate circle; Tanya was an active member of her church community and a longtime volunteer with the Special Olympics, touching many lives with her kindness and enthusiasm. Tanya faced numerous health challenges throughout her life, confronting each obstacle with remarkable stoicism and toughness. She chose to fight her battles privately, maintaining her dignity and strength while continuing to be a pillar of support for her family. In her later years, Tanya bravely faced Alzheimer's disease with the same courage and resilience that defined her character. Though her four grandchildren—Kinsley, Atticus, William, and Maggie—were born after her diagnosis, and never had the chance to truly know her, the love she had for them was evident in every glance and smile. Her devoted husband, Graham, provided steadfast and loving care, doing everything within his power to ensure she could remain in the comfort of their home, despite the progression of her illness. Tanya was fortunate to have a committed group of caregivers, to whom we will be eternally grateful, who provided her with the highest level of love and care and truly became a part of our family. No funeral service is planned at this time, but a celebration of life is to come (spring or summer 2025--TBA).
