Joyce Muriel Wood

December 21, 1924 - February 21, 2022

JOYCE MURIEL WOOD (BERRY) HALIFAX, DIED 2022 FEBRUARY 21 Wife of William, mother of Richard (Pam), Patricia (Bob), and Elizabeth (Julian), grandmother of Allison, Lesley, Thomas, Bronwen, Teri, Lisa, and Michael, greatgrandmother of Rainie, Dexter, Remy, Ethan, Emma, Kieran, Logan, and Connor, Joyce died comfortably in her sleep at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her only, younger, sibling, Barbara. Joyce was born in London, England on 21 December 1924 to parents Geoff and Winifred. After growing up and marrying in suburban London, Joyce emmigrated to Canada in 1957 and lived in Burlington, Collingwood, and Caistorville (Ontario) before she made Halifax her home in late 1999. Joyce became a Registered Nurse at the London Hospital during WWII. As one who cared for gravely wounded servicemen she entered adult life with a grit that most in later generations have not had to develop. She brought that strength to the family she and Bill started in 1948. Her job for the next nine years was mother and homemaker. Hoever, emmigration to Canada led to some difficult times financially and Joyce added work outside the home to her responsibilities for approximately ten years. Much of that external work was again in nursing but she always considered herself first and foremost as a devoted wife and mother. Those priorities led her to a variety of leadership roles in the Mothers Union. It is no exaggeration to say that to know Joyce was to adore her. She brought joy into every room she entered. However, her tiny stature could be misleading. She was extremely physically and emotionally strong. She had a life-long spiritual faith, expressed through her membership in the Anglican church and partnered formidably with that of her husband, Bill. Joyce’s family thank all the staff at Melville Gardens whose gentle care and professionalism have made the last three years of her life as enjoyable as possible.
