March 30, 1937 - December 2, 2021
THELMA FRANCES (FOX) GREENWOOD, of Halifax, Nova Scotia It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Thelma on December 2, 2021. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, knew few limits on protecting those she loved, and could hold a grudge against those she felt wronged her or the people she loved. She was generous woman of wide ranging intelligence and wit. Those who knew her will miss her sense of humour, her tenacity and her self-described “warrior’s heart”. Thelma is survived by her daughter Kelly Lynne Greenwood, son-in-law Karl Penney, and her adored grandchildren, Kyle and Kira Penney. She rejoiced in their births, took great pride in their accomplishments, and loved being their “TuTu”. Thelma was a daughter of the late Mildred Jane (Hawes) and Sidney Wallace Fox. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Joseph Carl Greenwood (Thelma considered him her most precious gift from God), by her sister Shirley Juanita Vaughan earlier this year, and by her brother George Gerald Fox. She is also survived by her nephews, Dr. Daniel Vaughan and Ted Vaughan, and by her niece Vicky Vaughan. Vicky was a tremendous support to Thelma in recent years, and they shared many outings, often involving shopping and dining. Whenever they were together, there was always lots of laughter. Thelma had fond memories of building a cottage at Porters Lake, and spending many summer weekends there swimming, boating and water skiing. She treasured the 21 winters she and Joe, and she alone for 5 winters after his passing, spent at their home in Clearwater, Florida. She made many incredible friends there, and gives a special shout out to Pat and Denny Gahs. She was a regular attendee at the annual Nova Scotia Picnic held in the area, and had the opportunity to travel from there to different parts of the US, and the Caribbean. Thelma also introduced many of her Florida friends to her home Province of Nova Scotia. Thelma especially treasured special holidays and cruises with Joe, Kelly, Karl, Kyle and Kira. She read a lot and loved to dance. In her earlier years she bowled. After spending winters in Florida, she took up golf, being most proud of her hole-in-one. Swimming was a regular activity for many years: at the Stadacona Pool, in Porters Lake, at numerous beaches in Nova Scotia and around the world, at the Waegwoltic Club with Kelly and her cousins and later with Kyle and Kira, and at the pool in The Country Park in Florida where she was often up early for water aerobics sessions. Thelma was a long standing member of CFB Halifax Curling Club, and part of the group which helped establish the Business Women’s League there. Over the years she volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as well as with Hospice at Northwood. Her long career was with the Department of National Defence, mostly at the Fleet School and the Civilian Personnel Office. She maintained a special friendship with former co-workers, and Saturday morning breakfast with them was a long-standing ritual. We extend a special thanks to the staff at V6 West at Camp Hill Veterans Long Term Care, to the Seniors Mental Health Team, to family physician Dr. Charlotte Calnen, and to the Alzheimer’s Society. Cremation arrangements are through Harbourside Regional Crematorium. Online condolences may be made at: www.harboursidecremation.ca/obituaries. Public Health rules permitting, a Celebration of Life is planned for the spring of 2022. No flowers Please Thelma bids a fond farewell to family and friends, and thanks them for the memories made together. Her parting message to all: DO NOT SHED TEARS IN SADNESS. ANY TEARS SHED SHOULD BE IN HAPPINESS AND PRIDE TO CELEBRATE MEMORIES AND A LIFE LIVED WELL.
