Allen Calnen

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allen Calnen, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the age of 80, with his family by his side at the Hospice Halifax. Allen was an amazing father, grandfather, partner, uncle, and friend. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Tammy Calnen-Mackey (Darren)Dartmouth ; his cherished grandson Cory (Molly)Kingston, Ontario; his stepdaughter Tammy Gray (Darren)Dartmouth; his former wife Patricia of Dartmouth ; and his best friend Carol Langille of Dartmouth, his buddy Paul Allen from Halifax . He is also survived by his sister Margaret (Barron) Kenty; many nieces & nephews Allen will be deeply missed by his extended family, in-laws, and many dear friends. Allen was predeceased by his parents, Sabine and Albert Calnen, of L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Nova Scotia; his precious granddaughter Kaitlyn, whom he loved and adored; his partner Linda and his 31 siblings Born and raised in the south end of Halifax, Allen came from a very large family and was one of 32 children. His father, Albert, was 75 years old when Allen was born and passed away when Allen was just 13 months old. His sister Margaret played a significant role in helping their mother raise him. Allen was a hard worker throughout his life. He worked at Stadacona, Farmers dairy as an account, then the City of Halifax, also, he organized the opening of a co-op in lower Sackville, he also held many side jobs, including driving taxi, transporting pilots and flight attendants to and from the airport, and working as a commissioner at the VG Hospital. He had a love for baseball (especially the Toronto Blue Jays), hockey, and playing bingo. Above all else, Allen’s greatest joy was being a father and a “Grumps.” Tammy, Cory, and Kaitlyn were his entire world. He will always be remembered as a devoted father, loving grandfather, proud uncle, and loyal friend. Allen’s legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his niece, Pat Sullivan, and to Carol Langille for being there every day, as well as to Hospice Halifax for the exceptional care shown to Allen. He was treated with dignity, compassion, and kindness—truly like a king. A celebration of life will be held on Jan 16, 2026 at 2pm-5pm at the Spryfield Royal Canadian legion branch ( 7 Sussex Street, Halifax, NS ) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Halifax in Allen’s memory. hospicehalifax.ca.
