Beverly Jean Smiley

Beverly Jean Smiley 1939-2023 Smiley, Beverly Jean, formerly of Port Dufferin and Halifax. In her 85th year with family by her side, Bev peacefully journeyed to the stars on November 12, 2023 at Sagewood Continuing Care, Cranberry Cottage, Lower Sackville. Beverly was born on January 23rd, 1939, in her Grandparent’s home on Smiley’s Point Road, Port Dufferin, NS. Bev was the second of nine children born to the late Hector Mathew Smiley Jr. 1907-1987 and Catherine Elizabeth (Patriquin) Smiley 1919-2007. She is survived by her daughter Cathy (Dave) Specht, Barton, Son Bradford Archibald (Anne Peers), Surrey, BC; Her Granddaughters Christa Specht (Craig Lutz), Smiths Cove; Heather Specht (Brian Grenier) Sackville; Trisha Specht, Halifax as well as her cherished Great Granddaughter Kayla Specht, Sackville. Also surviving are her siblings, Elaine Porter, Halifax; Steven Smiley (Sharon), Bridgewater; Sharon Finlayson (Malcolm) Vancouver, BC; Heather Smiley-Stone (Paul Stone) Halifax and Brent Smiley (Rita) Richmond Hill, On. Brother-In-Law, Robert (Bob) Mahen Charlottetown, PEI. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom she held dear., and not to be forgotten, her long time and dearest friend, Marilyn Wilneff (Richard) Truro. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother Gary H. Smiley (2001). Former husband, Charles Burton Archibald (2001). Brother David Wentford Smiley (2018). Sister Ruth Mary Mahen (2021). She was also predeceased by her beloved first-born son, Charles (Bud) Matthew Archibald (2023). Bev was a young stay-at-home Mum and her family were always her greatest pride and joy. Some of the many things Bev loved in life where music, gardening, swimming and playing Bridge. Bev was also a talented artist. A gift she inherited from her mother and in turn passed onto her children, grand children and great-granddaughter. Bev lived most of her life in Nova Scotia apart from 7 years (1968-1975) living in Montreal, QC. where her youngest son Brad was born in September of 1968. From the moment Bev arrived at Sagewood Continuing Care in Lower Sackville, she knew she was home. Bev loved and was loved by her caregivers who always treated her with dignity and respect. This wonderful relationship soon earned her the title of, “Beverly Jean The Cranberry Queen”. Bev was a “Sagewood Socialite” who enjoyed a variety of activities, especially the Jam socials, bingo and never missed an opportunity to show off her red lipstick. Music was the way to Bev’s heart, from Johnny Cash to Elvis. She was particularly proud when her brother David or son Brad came to play guitar and sing for her. The bird feeder outside Bev’s window gave her so much joy and laughter. She spent hours watching the many varieties of visiting birds. Bev could also be found in the garden soaking up the sun any time the weather permitted. A tremendous thank you to ALL of Bev’s Sagewood Family. It soon became very apparent to us that what you do every single moment of the day at Sagewood, is a Vocation and It fills our hearts with joy and peace that Bev was able to call Sagewood home for more than a decade. We admire and are so thankful for each and every one of you.
