Dennis William Cann

Our family is very sad to announce the death of Dennis William Cann on January 13 2025 at the Halifax Infirmary. His death was peaceful and he was surrounded by the love of family and friends. Dennis was born (April 26 1953) and educated in Halifax. He grew up in Purcell's cove. As a young man he travelled to Europe and Africa and then 'went out West' to seek his fortune. His most memorable job was driving a train inside a mine in Northern Manitoba. So he returned to Nova Scotia and got a job working on the railway. He then trained as a journeyman carpenter. Building things, making things and fixing things was a passion. He loved renovating old houses and took great pride in a job well done. He loved music, reading and nature and his pets. He was an excellent guitar player but too humble to admit it. We all enjoyed his musical backdrop to evenings on the deck or at the cottage. He loved jamming with his friends and noodling along by himself. Dennis was also a devoted sports fan with a fondness for the underdog. The family is confident that the Habs will win the Stanley Cup soon in his honour and the Packers are going for the Superbowl next year. Dennis was predeceased by his parents William Crowell Cann and Vera Cann (White) and by his first wife Margaret Cann (Isnor). He also lost too many good friends too soon. He is survived by his wife Karen Maley and by his son Shaun Cann (Morgan Thompson) and grandson Banks, and son Colin Cann (Chantal Smarden) and granddaughter Kennedy. Banks and Kennedy were the lights of his life and have brought us enormous joy. He is also survived by his brother Steven Cann (Sheri Nicholson) and by Anjelique Nicholson and daughters Mallory, Madison and Mila. And by Courtney Nicholson and son Lincoln. He is also survived by his niece Sayde Maley. Nieces Charla and Paula Isnor and their families. Dennis faced tragedy, struggle and ill health with courage, compassion and determination and occasional stubbornness. He was very proud of his sons and the men they turned into. He was a wonderful friend. Always willing to lend a hand or an ear. He was the best father and husband and the best Son anyone could have had. We will miss him terribly. A reception is being held at the Purcells Cove Social Club 16 Shipside Lane Halifax from 1pm to 4pm on Friday 31 January 2025. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
