Gregory Joseph Murphy

Gregory Murphy, a free spirit and world traveller, passed away on August 17, 2024, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Hazel, and their daughter, Emma-Leigh. Born on March 12, 1949, in Halifax, Greg was the youngest child of Cyril and Emma Murphy (nee Smith). Greg had a wonderful childhood growing up with two older brothers, Steven and Kevin. He is predeceased by his parents. Greg’s life was a tapestry of adventure and curiosity. His work in the jewellery business took him to many far-flung destinations, including his favourites Mexico and India, where he immersed himself in local cultures and formed lifelong friendships. He was an accomplished photographer, certified scuba instructor, and skilled handyman. Despite his global explorations, Halifax remained his forever home. In his mid-40s, Greg found Hazel, and together, they embarked on an incredible adventure: parenthood. He was immensely proud of their daughter, Emma-Leigh, who shares his determination and adventurous spirit. Their home was a hub of laughter, great food, and cherished memories. Greg’s non-traditional life inspired him to write his first book, Samsara, drawing from his many exploits. His legacy lives on through his wife, Hazel; daughter, Emma-Leigh; brothers, Steven and Kevin (Sally); niece and goddaughter, Gillian (Simon) and her children Ben and Annie, and nephew Peter (Nikki). He was lovingly known as Uncle Murph to his nephew Nate (Hayley) and their girls Aurora and Tatum. He counted himself lucky to be an honorary grandfather to his 3 wonderful Auld boys, Mason, Bennett, and Campbell. His extended, crazy Campbell clan will forever miss his presence, countless stories, and incredible sense of humour. His unwavering loyalty will be dearly missed by his many close friends–you know who you are. Greg proudly served his role as mentor, guide, and advisor to Corey and the three Elwoods to the fullest of his abilities over many years. As a parting tribute, let us remember the lyrics from one of Greg’s favourite artists, Jackson Browne: “Now if you see Morocco, I know you’ll go in style, I may not see Morocco for a little while. But while you’re there, I was hoping you might keep it in your mind, To save me just a taste of something fine.” May Greg’s spirit continue to wander the universe which we all share until the end of time. As Greg wished, a celebration of life in his honour will be held at a later date. He wanted one last party!
