Ronald William Maher

: The family is heartbroken to announce the death of Ronald William Maher, devoted husband and father. He passed away peacefully at the QE11 HSC on Tuesday Dec. 5th with his loving wife Virginia at his side. We thank the staff on 8.2 for providing such good care. Ron was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Gertrude Maher of Fairview and his older brothers Gerald, Ralph, Lorne, Allan, Ted and sister Betty. He and his siblings cherished their childhood summers spent at the family homestead in Glen Margaret. He is survived by wife Virginia(nee Basden), his darling companion of over 60 years, children Ronald Jr. ( Karen), Kevin ( Allison), Jeff ( Holly), Julie, Ben ( Susan), grandchildren Michael, Brian, Christopher, Sean, Madeline, Ronnie, Kevin , Will, Matthew, Jack, Gracie and Henry, great grand-children Victoria, Liam, Naomi, Roman and Adalyn. “Grampy/Papa” loved each and every one of them, and to him, family was everything. He lived by the principle that the best thing you could give your children is your time. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family members that he was very close to. Ron loved music, especially if it was performed by his talented children or grandchildren. He was particularly fond of John Denver and The Beatles. As a younger man, Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman and had many outdoor adventures and misadventures with his brothers. In later years, the “Hunting Camp” was his home away from home and a popular gathering place for good friends, fellow hunting enthusiasts and card players. Ron (Coach) was a huge sports fan, especially of baseball. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching his own softball team featuring his sons, nephews, and friends. He played various sports over the years (basketball, gym hockey, golf). Later in life he was more of an arm-chair athlete and life coach for others. A voracious reader who enjoyed traveling, he made many trips with his wife including fulfilling his life-long dream of discovering his family roots in Kilkenny, Ireland. Ron's working career was mainly in the plumbing and heating industry, where he made many friends over the years. Coach was one of a kind. He loved people and took a genuine interest in every little detail of their life. With his kindness, generosity and sense of humour, he will be forever missed. There will be no service at this time. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at a later date, to be announced. Should you wish, donations can be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
